Supervised Injection Site Insite to Stay Open

On September 29, 2011, the Supreme Court of Canada ruled unanimously to uphold supervised injection site Insite’s legal exemption allowing some injecting drug users (IDUs) in the Downtown Eastside neighborhood of Vancouver to continue to inject their own drugs safely, with sterile equipment, without fearing police intervention.

Portugal – Following the recent three-year renewal of Quinta das Lapas Therapeutic Community’s certification to the ISO 9001:2008 “Quality Management System”, Dianova announced the publication of the preliminary report of a longitudinal study scheduled until 2014: “From Dependence to Re-integration – a study of substance abusers’ social trajectories after program completion.”

Uruguay – National Debate on Drugs

The Dianova Foundation in Uruguay participated in the first national debate on drugs, held in Montevideo from 29 to 31 August.
In Uruguay, substance abuse related issues have become more and more extensive in recent years. However, some prominent political and social figures blow the whistle on the overall inadequacy of public responses and call for the implementation of a large national debate that could result in “a new generation of drug policies”.

Dianova Center Inaugurated in Chile

Dianova in Spain Becomes a Member of RIOD

During its July 21 General Meeting, the Ibero-American Network of NGOs working in the field of drug dependence (RIOD) approved an application for membership from Dianova in Spain. The RIOD is a nonprofit umbrella organization which main role is to help connect Ibero-American addiction service providers that are working in the fields of substance abuse prevention and treatment, social and professional integration, and vocational training.

Bolivia to Withdraw from UN Single Convention

Bolivia is set to withdraw from an international narcotics convention in protest at its classification of coca leaves as an illegal drug. President Evo Morales, who is also the leader of one of the country’s main coca producers’ unions, has asked Congress to pass a law that would take Bolivia out of the 1961 United Nations Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs.
