Dianova Chile Holds a Side-Event at the United Nations

Organization of a side event during CSW57

On the occasion of the 57th session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women (CSW57), held from 6 to 15 March at New York City’s UN headquarters under the theme « Elimination and prevention of all forms of violence against women and girls », Dianova organized and sponsored in collaboration with the Methodist Church a side-event for the purpose of sharing their experiences on the theme: Overcoming the pain of violence and abuse. This side event was held on Friday, March 8, during  International Women’s Day.

Speakers stressed the impact of an experience developed in Chile with a gender-based drug treatment program dedicated to address the needs of women with dependent children, pregnant or not, with alcohol or substance abuse related problems. Special emphasis was placed on the importance of implementing strategic alliances between community-based organizations and public agencies to further develop these initiatives in three regions of the country. Participants also stressed the importance of addressing the problem of violence within the family circle, the couple and vis-à-vis children, in particular with respect to the acquisition of autonomy and to the reinforcement of the bond between mother and child.

Panelists were coming from various regions of the world including Japan, Spain, the UK and the USA. Participants stressed the imporance of coordination and collaboration among public and governmental agencies, civic organizations and non-governmental groups in addressing interrelated issues around violence and abuse against women and girls.
