Camp Deer Run Camp Deer Run Chosen to Host Free Summer Camp for Children of the U.S. Military The National Military Family Association (NMFA) has announced that Camp Deer Run has been chosen to host one of the popular Operation Purple Summer Camps in 2007. NMFA developed this free summer camp program in response to the need for increased support for military children, especially those whose parents are or will be deployed overseas. Camp Deer Run will join a select list of dedicated teams to host more than 3,500 deserving children at camps in 26 states. “NMFA is excited to welcome Camp Deer Run as a partner in this very worthwhile program,” said Tanna Schmidli, NMFA Chairman of the Board/CEO. “We look forward to working together to, indeed, make a difference in these children’s lives”. Camp Deer Run will offer two camp sessions this summer – July 1st thru 14th for 13 to 15 year olds and July 16 th thru 22 nd for 10 to 12 year olds. Each camp is “purple”, meaning that it is open to children of any member of the seven uniformed services, including National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration and United States Public Health Service, plus the National Guard and Reserve. About NMFA The National Military Family Association is the only national organization whose sole focus is the military family and whose goal is to influence the development and implementation of policies that will improve the lives of the families of the seven uniformed services. For more than 35 years, its staff and volunteers, comprised mostly of military family members, have built a reputation for being the leading experts on military family issues. Visit www.nmfa.org for more information. About Camp Deer Run Camp Deer Run rests in a beautiful, rustic preserve in the foothills of the Catskill Mountains. The natural features of the camp are unusually varied, encompassing rolling hills, woodlands, meadows, marshlands and streams, making the camp a natural environmental laboratory. Deer Run recreational options include traditional camp activities, plus adventure activities such as extensive high and low ropes challenge courses, an environmental education program, miles of hiking trails, adventure games and many other choices. The challenge course addresses a range of personal development issues, including teamwork, self-esteem, trust, leadership, conflict-resolution and more. The environmental program teaches participants about the natural world and their place in it and includes activities such as interpretive nature hikes, wilderness survival, orienteering and aquatic studies. Off-site activities may include horseback-riding, white water rafting, rock-climbing, trapeze school and cave visits, in addition to visits to West Point, military bases and historic military sites. Other activities relating specifically to the needs of military children will also be included. Mental Health Counselors will be available for any child in need of counseling. Camp Deer Run is accredited by the American Camp Association and licensed by the New York Dept. of Health.
